Q. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers

Are you looking for a driving school in Stoke on Trent to help with your Show Me Tell Me Questions?

Answer

Firstly, you will need to turn on the ignition so the washers/wipers have power. The controls will vary from car to car, but the car I give driving lessons in, which is the one in the video above, is a Ford Fiesta. To wash the front windscreen, push the end of the right control stalk in for a few seconds until there’s enough water on the window. The wipers will continue to wipe several times before stopping on their own. The rear window can be washed by pulling the stalk and holding it towards you for a few seconds. Once you’ve applied enough water, you will need to push the stalk away from you to turn the wipers off, otherwise they will continue to wipe intermittently.

Why is it important to know how to do this?

The windows may need be cleaned at any time throughout the year, not just during the winter, therefore it is important to know how to use all of your ancillary controls. Imagine driving down a fast moving road, your window gets dirty from the spray of another vehicle and you don’t know how to wash your windows. In just a few seconds the effects of not seeing clearly could be fatal.

How to check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear

Driving Lesson Questions

  1. Q. Show Me how to check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle.

Answer

To check the handbrake, you should firstly press firmly on the footbrake.  This will ensure that the car doesn’t move whilst you’re performing the check.  Then all you need to do is release the handbrake, then reapply it, ensuring that it is secure and does not come to the end of the working travel.  All I mean by ‘not coming to the end of the working travel’ is that the handbrake does not come too far up. You can then release the footbrake.

Why Do I need to check the Hand Brake for Wear?

Regular checks to the handbrake are important to ensure the car remains secure when you intend it to be.  Failure to check the handbrake may mean that one day, you park on a hill, then return to find your car not where you expect it, possibly having rolled back into a nice, expensive car behind!

How often should I check my handbrake?

As I guide, I would recommend to check your handbrake at least weekly, but really you could be checking it on a daily basis, as every time you drive you will need to use your handbrake, so you might as well check it regularly.

How to check your indicators are working

Answer: How to check your indicators are working

There are 2 ways you can check that the direction indicator lights are working.  The easiest way is to press the hazard warning light switch, and walk around the car to check the individual lights are working.  There are 2 lights at the front of the car, 2 at the rear, and 1 on each side (either on the door mirrors or the front wing).  The second way is to apply the indicators individually, so apply the left indicator and check the left side of the car, then apply the right indicator and check the right side of the car.

Why do you need to check your indicators are working?

It is really important to check your indicators are working.  Imagine you wanted to pull over to the side of the road, and there’s a car following you quite closely. You indicate to tell the driver behind that you intend to stop, but without knowing it, your indicator light at the rear isn’t working.  How might this affect the car behind?  How Will the driver behind know you’re going stop?  Will the driver be able to slow enough to avoid having an accident with you?

This is just one of many, many possible scenarios that could happen if you’re indicator lights are not working.

How often should I check my indicator lights?

As I guide, I would recommend to check your indicator lights at least weekly, but take any opportunity you can to check them.  For example, when you get in your car, if you have a remote central locking key, when you press it, the indicator lights normally come on so you could check then.  You may see a reflection of your car somewhere, possibly in a shop window, you could use this to check your lights.

Learn to Drive in Stoke on Trent – Show Me Tell Me Questions

If you want to learn to drive in Stoke on Trent you will need to learn what are know as ‘show me tell me’ questions.  When you are learning to drive, your driving instructor, at some point, will talk to you about these Show Me Tell Me questions. They will normally incorporate them into your driving lessons, but you will need to do a little bit of studying yourself to learn all of the questions.

What are Show Me Tell Me questions, and when will they be asked?

Show Me Tell Me questions were introduced into the UK driving test to help learners understand the use of the cars ancillary controls, and to help them make basic maintenance checks related to the car. The subjects covered by these questions are things that you really need to know if you want to be driving, and will help you to perform basic maintenance checks to keep you and you car safely on the road. At the start of your driving test you will be asked 2 of these show me tell me questions.

What if I don’t know the answer, or get the question wrong?

The answers don’t need to be word perfect, or textbook answers. All the examiner is looking for, is that you have a general knowledge, and have a reasonable idea about what has been asked. However, if you do answer the question entirely wrong, or can’t give an answer, 1 driving (minor) fault will be recorded on your driving test report for each question answered incorrectly. So you could end up with 2 driving faults before you’ve even started to drive!

So, what questions could I be asked?

There are 19 questions that the driving test examiner may ask you. It’s important to listen to what they ask of you, and whether they want you to physically do something or whether they just want you to explain something to them. Below is a list of all the questions you may be asked. Click on the question to view our post with an instructional video, full guidance with the answers and reasons you would need to do the checks:
